NINETEEN

Hull Fair was in full swing by the time Jenni parked the car. In complete contrast with Hollie’s morning visit, the rides were now active, and the early evening crowds were making their way around the multitudinous attractions. There was a crackle of eager anticipation in the crisp autumn air.

‘Do you want me to stick around, boss, or will you hitch a lift back to HQ afterwards?’

Jenni looked like she was hoping to hang around. She’d missed out on that morning’s visit to the newly discovered crime scene, and Hollie couldn’t blame her for wanting to take a look for herself and sniff around a bit. She was always happy to have new eyes in a case, on the off chance they spotted something that had been missed.

‘Come with me and see how it works with the press. It’ll be good for your personal development. We’ve got time to check out the crime scene first, though. Have you done media training yet?’

‘A bit,’ Jenni replied, fidgeting in the driver’s seat, her voice wavering at the prospect of facing a wall of journalists. ‘The thought of it horrifies me.’

Hollie climbed out of the car and checked her phone to see where she was supposed to be meeting for the press briefings.

‘The media is a big part of a case like this,’ she continued, looking around to get a sense of direction. She started walking and Jenni followed close by. It was a vast site and even harder to navigate with all the noise and bustle. ‘This place will be buzzing tonight with people talking about the death. Anderson’s got extra officers all over speaking to members of the public, and we need to keep an ear out in case anyone saw anything.’

They made their way through the crowds, which seemed busy for the early time of evening. Already music was blaring from speakers, show people were encouraging passersby to dip their hands in their pockets and try the stalls, and the smell of frying food was wafting in all directions.

‘Here it is,’ Hollie said, having successfully located the ghost train where Carrick’s body had been found earlier that day. The ride was now completely cordoned off with fencing and police tape, and a witness appeal poster citing the Crimestoppers number was attached to the front of it. A couple of bobbies were stationed there, standing next to an ‘A’ board on which were written the words:

‘You’re not going to be able to see much now it’s all blocked off,’ Hollie continued, ‘but be my guest, take a walk around, see if you can come up with anything that the rest of us might have missed. We’ve got ten minutes before I’m needed by the press team. We’re meeting over by the big wheel at the far side of the showground, so if I lose you, meet me there.’ Hollie pointed into the distance, and Jenni followed her track. She felt like she was letting a blood hound off its leash.
